On Friday, August 24th Valley Behavioral Health had a successful evening providing sensory-friendly haircuts! We are so thankful to the awesome team at Cloud 9 Salon & Spa in Martins Ferry Ohio for opening for a few extra hours to provide this service. We utilize ABA strategies to prevent stress and meltdowns during this difficult activity for children with autism and other sensory-needs. ABA Therapy utilizes research-based strategies to teach skills to individuals to be independent and successful in all aspects of life.
Many children with autism, sensory integration disorder, or a multitude of other disabilities struggle with hypersensitivity to sensory stimuli. Hypersensitivity is when you feel sensory stimulation more strongly than others. Smells may be stronger, lights brighter, textures and touch feel stronger. Due to this hypersensitivity, when getting a haircut, the cutting of the scissors sounds so excruciatingly loud, the feeling of their hair being pulled feels like their pulling out chunks of hair, the sound of the buzzer is unbearably loud, the feeling of the hair falling on their neck and face is amplified. When people without hypersensitivity get a haircut, these feelings may feel weird, or tickle, but for individuals with hypersensitivity, it becomes painful.
When a parent attempts to take a child with hypersensitivity to get a haircut, there is a lot going on, lots of people and it becomes very difficult for the child to be successful, and that is really defeating for parents. We are so excited about this collaboration with Cloud 9 hair salon! If you have a child who struggles when it’s time for their next haircut, give Cloud 9 a call!
Our next sensory-friendly day is scheduled for October 5th from 4-6!
